The U.S. Prepares “Final Offer” on Gaza: Seal the Deal or End Negotiations

The United States is taking steps to end the war in Gaza with a “final offer” on a “take it or leave it” basis, aiming to put both sides in a serious position amid mutual accusations of obstructing negotiations.

According to the Washington Post on Sunday, an informed U.S. official revealed that Washington is in talks with Egypt and Qatar about the details of a “final offer” for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of detainees. This offer is expected to be presented to Israel and Hamas in the coming weeks, and if both parties fail to accept it, it will mark the “end of negotiations.”

U.S. officials told the newspaper that President Joe Biden‘s efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza have become more urgent on Sunday, following the Israeli military‘s announcement of the recovery of the bodies of six Israeli detainees in the sector, including American Hirsch Goldberg-Pollin.

A senior official added, “You cannot keep negotiating on this issue. This process must end at some point.” He noted that the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar had been working on the final proposal before the discovery of the bodies of the six detainees in a tunnel south of Gaza, in Rafah.

He continued, “Does this end discussions about the deal? No, this incident should increase the urgency to reach a deal at this final stage we are already in.”

For months, Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. have been mediating indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, successfully concluding a truce that lasted only a week at the end of November last year.

Israel’s announcement of the discovery of hostage bodies in Gaza sparked a wave of protests against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s policies, with calls for urgent actions to finalize an agreement aimed at saving the lives of the remaining detainees.
