The World Food Program warns against looting of aid in Sudan… details
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has warned of the risk of food insecurity in Sudan and a number of surrounding countries.
In a statement published today by Reuters, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) confirmed the looting of 17,000 metric tons of food aid in Sudan.
“Since the fighting began six weeks ago, 17,000 metric tons of food aid has been lost to looting, said WFP Sudan director Edi Rowe.”
The World Food Program (WFP) announced in early May that food products for the needy in Sudan, estimated at between US$13 million and $14 million, have been looted since the outbreak of fighting, some in WFP warehouses and others from trucks.
“Looting is rampant, and reports of WFP deliveries are still being investigated, he said.”
Food insecurity in Sudan, Haiti and the Sahel (Burkina Faso and Mali) is now causing the “highest levels of concern,” the World Food Program (WFP) said in a report released yesterday.
“Haiti, the Sahel (Burkina Faso, Mali) and Sudan have been raised to the highest level of concern,” WFP said, “due to severe restrictions on the movement of people and goods in Haiti, as well as in Burkina Faso and Mali, and the recent conflict in Sudan.”
