Threatening Security and Stability.. Paraguay Declares the Muslim Brotherhood a Terrorist Group
“It threatens international security and stability, and constitutes a serious violation of the purposes and principles of the United Nations.” This is what was stated in a draft resolution considering the “Muslim Brotherhood” a terrorist group, which was presented by Lilian Samaniego, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 45-member Paraguay Congress.
Local media highlighted the approval of the resolution, stating that among the justifications for approving the resolution, “the Muslim Brotherhood, which was founded in Egypt in 1928, provides ideological support to those who use violence and threaten stability and security in both the East and the West, and that Paraguay unequivocally rejects all terrorist acts, methods and practices.”
The Última Hora newspaper website mentioned that Paraguay, led by Lebanese-origin Mario Abdo Benítez, had previously considered Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Hamas as terrorist organizations “as part of its participation in the war on terrorism, which limits these groups’ ability to plan terrorist attacks and destabilize countries.” The newspaper also recalled “important countries that have considered these groups terrorist, including Russia in 2003, Egypt in 2013, followed by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bahrain a year later.”
