Tunisia – Kais Saied calls for economic reconciliation

Tunisian President Kais Saied on Monday appointed Justice Minister Leïla Jaffel to form a committee to promote reconciliation with businessmen.

During a meeting at the Carthage Palace with the Minister of Justice, Kais Saied demanded the return of looted funds to the Tunisian people as soon as possible.

The meeting addressed the need to respond immediately to the demands set by the Tunisian people more than a decade ago and reiterated during yesterday’s protests in all regions of the country.

Tunisian President Kais Saied is betting on a project for “penal reconciliation” or “economic reconciliation” with Tunisian businessmen involved in acts of corruption with the aim of recovering the money of those involved in economic and financial crimes, to the treasury of the Tunisian state and employ it in achieving investment and development projects in the country.

On December 13, the Tunisian cabinet approved the penal reconciliation decree.

Tunisian President Kais Saied has previously said that the decree only concerns those involved in economic crimes and not just those who looted the country before 2011.
