Resentment and solidarity

A wave of demonstrations in Tunisia since January 18, raising social demands, including the right to work, freedom, justice and equality.

The infection of popular anger has spread to several Tunisian cities, in protests that included a massive campaign of arrests including hundreds of young protesters.

In response to the question, 10 Tunisian and international organizations issued a joint statement expressing their support for the demands of the demonstrators, according to a statement released Tuesday by the (independent) “Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights”.

In their joint statement, the organizations called on the Tunisian government to adhere to the principles of the 2014 constitution, which obliges the state to respect the dignity of its citizens.

The statement condemned “the ill-treatment, the means of torture and the hasty legal proceedings against the demonstrators”.

And he believed that the continued pursuit by successive governments of the same economic and social options has contributed to the exacerbation of poverty, especially among vulnerable groups, and has forced thousands of young people and adults to access small and fragile jobs, which has contributed to the increase in poverty parallel of economic channels and fueled religious extremism.

He stressed that “such miserable situations have led to an intensification of the confrontation of the poor with the authority, which today, ten years after the fall of the Ben Ali regime (1987-2011), has not hesitated to respond to their suffering and their legitimate demands for repression.

The signatories of the declaration expressed their conviction that the Tunisian youth movement is indicating two things; The first is the economic and social dilemma that citizens face due to government failures, and the second is the indifference of the European Union and its governments who insist on collecting heavy debts, which has exhausted the situation in Tunisia.

They stressed that the time has come to cancel these debts and give these young people the opportunity to live and work in their country, calling on the government to release all the protesters illegally arrested and to take measures that meet the aspirations of the Tunisian people.
