Turkey: 25 women killed in one month

A women’s rights group in Turkey published a shocking toll of killings of women last November, and the reasons behind these crimes.

The “We Will Stop Femicide” platform said in a report it published yesterday: “Twenty-five women were killed last month, and 21 died suspiciously”, Turkish newspaper Zaman reported.

The report explained that the murder was related to causes; the desire for divorce, the rejection of reconciliation, the refusal to marry, the refusal to establish a relationship, and economic reasons.

The report stated: “Unless the perpetrator is identified, why women have been killed, unless a fair trial is held, suspects, accused and killers are punished with deterrent penalties and preventive measures are implemented, violence will continue to change in scale”.

A report issued by the Women’s Associations Union last month stated that 200 women in Turkey were killed after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided to withdraw from the Istanbul Agreement last March.

The decision to withdraw from the international agreement was made by a decree issued by President Erdogan, who explained that it was a step “to discourage homosexuality and preserve the traditional family structure.”

Women’s rights advocates have since been trying to protest and call for a reversal of the decision, despite the government’s claims that Turkey’s laws and constitution provide better protection for women.
