UAE calls on parties to conflict in Ukraine to engage in dialog

Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Political Affairs and Permanent Representative of the State to the United Nations, stressed that civilians are paying the highest price of war in Ukraine.

At a Security Council meeting on developments in Ukraine on Thursday night, she said the world was feeling the fallout from the war in Ukraine due to high prices and reduced food supplies.

The UAE ambassador to the United Nations called on the parties to the conflict in Ukraine to commit to dialog to stop the war.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate halt to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

Speaking at a session of the UN Security Council, he said that efforts should continue to release those trapped in Mariupol, stressing that the Russian attack violates the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the UN Charter, noting that the war in Ukraine leads to a crisis in the world markets and destroys the developing world.

The UN Secretary-General informed the Security Council on Thursday that a third operation was under way to evacuate civilians from the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol and the besieged Azovstal factory.

The UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross have so far helped evacuate some 500 civilians from the area in two operations over the past week. Guterres declined to elaborate on the new process to avoid undermining potential success.
