Ukrainian Weapons Threaten Putin’s Summer Residence.. Moscow Strengthens Air Defenses

Satellite images have shown that Russian authorities have strengthened security measures around President Vladimir Putin‘s summer residence north of Moscow, amid concerns over the range of Ukrainian weapons recently acquired from the West.

The images revealed “the installation of several Pantsir-S1 air defense systems around the presidential resort located in the heart of Valdai Park in the Novgorod region,” according to the American network CNN.

This luxurious residence is located on a 40-hectare peninsula between two lakes and is difficult to access due to strict security measures.

This resort has been a holiday destination for senior Russian officials since the time of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

Satellite images, first reported by Radio Free Europe, showed that Russian-made Pantsir missile systems were moved to the area between last September and May, a period during which Ukraine developed and used drones capable of launching deep strikes into Russia.

The images, provided by Maxar Technologies, showed air defenses positioned at several locations in the area, including on a tower deep in the forest, just a few kilometers from the complex.

The Pantsir-S1 systems are designed to counter short-range cruise missiles and drones, suggesting that their deployment near the resort could be a response to Ukrainian drone attacks.

To launch deeper strikes into Russia, Ukraine must rely on its own weapons, making drones an integral part of this strategy.

The presidential residence covers an area of 40 hectares, surrounded by water on three sides and fenced off from the rest of the park. It is also well protected from potential intruders, with extensive access restrictions.

A special permit is required to access the surrounding park, and the resort is completely off-limits, according to its official website. It has been closed indefinitely since last November.

The resort has been a holiday destination for senior Russian officials since the time of Joseph Stalin, who had a summer house built in the area, according to the Russian Presidential Property Management Department, which manages the resort. The Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that Nikita Khrushchev and Boris Yeltsin also stayed at this resort.
