UN Reports Reflect Shock at the Scale of Sudan’s Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

A UN official expressed concern over the crimes committed against civilians in al-Jazirah State, central Sudan, which have claimed the lives of dozens of civilians, describing these acts as “horrific.” Meanwhile, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, stated that the Union continues to work towards achieving justice.

In a statement, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, voiced her deep concern over reports of escalating armed violence in al-Jazirah State, which, according to reports, has led to the deaths of dozens of civilians.

On Saturday, Sudanese activists and doctors accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of killing 124 civilians in attacks on the village of Saraihah in al-Jazirah State, which were carried out in “retaliation” for the defection of leaders from that region who joined the army.

Salami’s statement added: “Preliminary reports between October 20 and 25 indicate that the Rapid Support Forces launched a major attack in eastern al-Jazirah regions.”

She continued: “According to the reports, RSF fighters indiscriminately fired on civilians, committed sexual violence against women and girls, looted markets and homes on a large scale, and set farms ablaze.”

Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, stated on his X account (formerly Twitter) that “the horrific images coming from al-Jazirah State in Sudan are alarming.”

He added: “Reports indicate that the Rapid Support Forces have committed further mass killings and rapes. The massacres against civilians must stop, and the perpetrators must be held accountable.”

Borrell confirmed that “the European Union continues to work towards achieving justice.”
