UN Security Council welcomes extension of Yemen truce, calls on parties to seize it
The UN Security Council on Thursday welcomed the renewal of a truce in Yemen for two more months.
In a statement, the council said the truce in Yemen represents an important opportunity to achieve peace and protect civilians.
The statement urged all Yemeni parties to seize the truce and reach a comprehensive political agreement.
The UN announced Tuesday evening that the truce in Yemen would be extended for another two months before the current truce expires.
“I am pleased to announce that both parties have agreed to extend the truce on the same terms for an additional two months from August 2, 2022, to October 2, 2022”, Hans Grundberg, the UN envoy to Yemen, said in a statement.
“This extension of the truce includes a commitment by the parties to intensify negotiations to reach an expanded truce agreement as soon as possible”, he said.
The Yemeni government and Houthi militias agreed in early June to extend a two-month truce that came into effect in April and effectively reduced fighting in a conflict the UN says has led to the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
