United Arab Emirates’ Development Projects in Yemen Embody Its Central Humanitarian Role

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is at the forefront of countries providing humanitarian and developmental support to Yemen, driven by its commitment to improving the lives of the Yemeni people and assisting them in overcoming challenging circumstances.

The UAE has launched numerous healthcare and service projects aimed at alleviating the suffering of Yemenis. Among the notable initiatives are the support and equipping of Shibam General Hospital, the rehabilitation and equipping of four hospitals in Shibam, and the rehabilitation of Shaqra Hospital in Abyan, in addition to providing free medical treatment sponsored by the UAE.

Hospital Rehabilitation

The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Works initiated a project to develop hospitals in the Yemeni governorate of Shibam, providing them with medical supplies and supporting them with medical staff and expertise to ensure their smooth operation and deliver healthcare to Yemenis.

As part of the healthcare system’s modernization and support, the UAE has been supporting Yemeni hospitals since late 2014, with a prominent example being Harib General Hospital, built in 1974. After its rehabilitation and restoration, it now serves as a refuge for over 100,000 individuals and thousands of displaced persons.

The hospital now serves around three directorates: “Harib” and “Al-Abdiyah” in Marib and “Ayn” in the Shabwah Governorate, and it also receives various humanitarian cases that require urgent intervention.

The UAE has constructed dozens of hospitals in Yemen, including the prominent Zayed Medical City in Mokha.

Water Supply

On another front, the development projects include water supply services, with the rehabilitation and maintenance of 21 water facilities in Abyan. In 2017, the UAE provided four generators to operate water wells in Ja’ar, and the UAE Red Crescent inaugurated four water wells in the Hadhramaut coast, benefiting over 200,000 people, along with 42 wells between 2016 and 2022.

The “Laud” water project was also implemented, providing water to 60,000 people in Abyan. Additionally, 50 dams and water barriers were built in Rada’a district in Abyan to collect rainwater.

Among the service projects undertaken by the UAE in several Yemeni cities are cleaning campaigns and spraying efforts to combat diseases in Zinzibar and Hanfir, in addition to its efforts in sand dune removal.
