Waddah Bin Attiyah: Houthis Exploit Eid al-Adha to Intensify Violations Against Yemenis

The Houthi militia has escalated its violations in Yemen as Eid al-Adha approaches, continuing its repressive practices against civilians and ignoring both regional and international calls for de-escalation.

Local sources across several Yemeni governorates reported that the militia intensified arbitrary arrest campaigns in Sana’a, Dhamar, and Hajjah, targeting activists, teachers, and community figures under the pretext of “acting against the state’s interests.” The group also imposed new restrictions on citizens’ movement and tightened security checkpoint inspections.

Meanwhile, human rights organizations accused the group of committing serious violations, including the confiscation of humanitarian aid meant for poor families and the banning of public celebrations in some areas under the pretense of “maintaining public order.”

These developments come as millions of Yemenis endure extremely dire humanitarian conditions, facing rising prices and shortages in essential supplies. This has made Eid preparations virtually impossible for most of the population, amid growing international silence over the Houthis’ repeated abuses.

Waddah Bin Attiyah, a member of the National Assembly of the Southern Transitional Council, accused the Houthi militia of increasing its violations ahead of Eid al-Adha, stating that the group exploits religious occasions to impose additional levies and taxes on citizens and merchants.

Bin Attiyah noted that the Houthis do not hesitate to confiscate humanitarian aid and deprive poor segments of society of their rights, while Yemenis suffer from catastrophic economic and living conditions.

He added that the group legitimizes looting and extortion in the name of religion, relying on laws that promote racism and benefit a specific elite at the expense of the wider population.

Bin Attiyah stressed that these violations prove the Houthis are determined to entrench their authority through force, with no regard for the suffering of citizens or the spirit of Eid al-Adha, which is supposed to be a time of peace and solidarity.
