Warnings of Health and humanitarian disasters in Sudan

The Sudan Doctors Syndicate (SMT) today announced that the death toll from the clashes has risen to at least 512 civilians and 2023 injuries.

The latest fighting in the city of El Geneina has left 89 people dead, Amnesty said in a statement cited by Reuters. It said there is no precise tally of casualties, and all hospitals in the city are out of service

The Pharmacists Association in Sudan said that the spread of corpses on the roads portends a health catastrophe,” stressing that dozens of corpses are on the streets of Khartoum, and the city of El Geneina also in Darfur (west of the country), as a result of the  of transportation being cut off amid the intensification of clashes despite the announced truce by the two sides .

Medics at El Geneina Hospital said bodies were lying on the roads but had not been transferred. due to the difficult security situation and the deployment of  armed tribesmen in large parts of the city .

“The shutdown of most hospitals in the capital has also exacerbated the tragedy, as well as the interruption of medicines and the closure of pharmacies .”

Factories, pharmaceutical companies, and warehouses were damaged and looted in several areas, which will exacerbate the country’s health and humanitarian disasters

Many local and international health organizations have warned of epidemics from corpses and hospitals being shut down if  fighting continues .

The Sudan Medical Association’s Preparatory Committee yesterday warned of the imminent collapse of the country’s health system, saying health facilities were going out of service “one by one.”

The syndicate said in a statement that the health facilities’ continued departure from service threatens to close completely, “in light of the continuation of military operations and continuous breaches of the ceasefire”, Al-Arabiya reported.

“The country has seen a massive exodus from Khartoum towards safer states, as well as evacuations of foreigners, but Sudanese fear  fighting could return with force when the operations end”

“The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative in Sudan, Axel Bishop, said in a press conference yesterday that some 40,000 refugees have fled Khartoum since the crisis began, seeking safety in refugee camps in the states of White Nile, Gedaref, and Kassala.”

In a press conference in Geneva, Bishop added that UNHCR had been forced to temporarily suspend most of its vital activities in Khartoum, Darfur, and North Kordofan after work in those areas had become “extremely dangerous.”

“The UNHCR representative said the suspension of some humanitarian programs was likely to exacerbate the risks faced by those who depend on humanitarian assistance for survival, saying it was extremely worrying that assistance could not be provided to those in need.”

Since April 15th, Sudan has witnessed violent clashes between the two military forces (the army) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), amid fears that the conflict will drag on, despite regional and international efforts to reach a permanent truce
