Washington Bombs Northern Sanaa Following Houthi Warning

The Iran-backed group warns against any attack targeting its territories during the Gaza ceasefire.

Early Sunday, Yemen’s Houthi group announced that the United States had conducted four airstrikes on the capital, Sanaa, in the country’s north, while warning against any attack during the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

In a breaking news update on Telegram, Al-Masirah, the group’s official channel, stated: “Four American airstrikes targeted the Al-Azraqain area north of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.”

The channel did not provide additional details regarding the outcome of the strikes, and no comment has been issued by the U.S.

The Houthis had earlier warned what they termed “hostile forces in the Red Sea” against “any aggression” on Yemen during the Gaza ceasefire.

The Iran-backed rebels, who control vast areas of Yemen, including Sanaa, claimed responsibility for an attack on several warships, including the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman.

In a statement, the Houthis declared: “The Yemeni armed forces warn hostile forces in the Red Sea against any aggression on our country during the Gaza ceasefire. Any attack will be met with qualitative military operations with no limits or red lines.”

The rebel leader, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, had previously threatened on Thursday to continue attacks on Israel if the truce agreement was not honored.

The first phase of the Gaza ceasefire is set to last for 42 days and was scheduled to begin at 6:30 AM GMT on Sunday but was delayed due to the list of hostages Hamas is set to release.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have carried out attacks off Yemen’s coast on ships they claim are linked to Israel, stating they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians amidst the Gaza conflict.

These attacks have disrupted navigation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, a key maritime route for global trade, prompting the U.S. to form a naval coalition and strike rebel targets in Yemen, occasionally with UK support.

On Sunday, the Houthis claimed to have targeted the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman and several warships with drones and cruise missiles. According to their statement, “the U.S. aircraft carrier was forced to leave the theater of operations.”

Earlier on Saturday evening, the Houthis announced two new operations targeting military sites deep inside Israeli territory, following an earlier attack they claimed targeted Israel’s Ministry of Defense.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated: “The ballistic force of the resistance carried out two operations against vital targets belonging to the Israeli enemy in the Umm Rashrash area in southern occupied Palestine.”

He added: “The first operation was carried out with a Zulfiqar ballistic missile, and the second with a cruise missile, both successfully hitting their targets.”

Yahya Saree also reiterated the Houthi forces’ support for Palestinian resistance in Gaza and their coordination to respond militarily to any violations or escalation by the Israeli enemy during the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
