Washington in response to Libya clashes: ‘they will be held accountable’
The United States has expressed concern about recent violence in Libya, and ongoing militia fighting continues in many areas of Libya.
Richard Ronald, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, called on the parties and political leaders to agree on a political path to elections that can establish a legitimate unified government to serve the interests of all Libyans.
In a tweet, Norland demanded that those responsible for the clashes in Misrata on Saturday be held accountable and urged all political actors and their supporters to withdraw to avoid further escalation and loss of life.
The Dafniya gate in Misrata and the Zreiq road near the Mediterranean coast witnessed an exchange of fire between militias known as the “Mahjoub Brigade” and the “Joint Force” of the outgoing government of national unity, after which the militias closed the road leading to Dafniya gate and the coastal road leading to the capital Tripoli.
Commenting on these clashes, the US ambassador said that “armed efforts, whether to test or defend the current political situation, carry the risk of returning Libya to a past era”, stressing that “those responsible for these acts will be held accountable”. Those responsible for such a scenario will be held accountable”.
The western region is witnessing armed clashes between rival militias on power, endangering the lives and property of civilians, with complete silence from the outgoing government of national unity and its security apparatus.
