Where did Hichem Mechichi go missing after his dismissal?
The majority of Tunisians are wondering about the whereabouts of the dismissed Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, in light of his absence, following the recent decisions of the President of the Republic Kais Saied.
“He has not appeared since Kais Saied decided, pursuant to Article 80 of the constitution, to dissolve parliament, lift the immunity of its members, and dismiss the head of government, amid talk by the Tunisian Brotherhood about his detention at the presidential palace.”
Where did Hisham Al-Mashaichi go?
Al-Hurra channel quoted private sources on its website, late on Sunday, that EL Mechichi was “cut off from communication” after heading to the Carthage Palace, but this has not been confirmed by any official body, and the presidency did not comment on the issue.
According to these sources, the channel’s website indicated that “it is likely that EL Mechichi was detained by the army forces,” after he was summoned to a meeting at the presidential palace.
Sources from the Tunisian website “Maghrebi Street” said that EL Mechichi was detained and placed under house arrest before the President of the Republic announced his latest decisions.
Meanwhile, Kalthoum Kannou, a well-known judge and former presidential candidate, confirmed the suspension of EL Mechichi in a post on Facebook.
El Mechichi is at home
On Monday, Reuters reported that a source close to him and two security sources said the deposed prime minister was “at home, not in detention.”
The last activity of Mechichi as Prime Minister was a visit he made two days ago to the state of Zaghouan in the northeast of Tunisia (51 kilometers away from the capital), as part of the follow-up campaign to immunize against the coronavirus.
During Sunday’s Tunisian street uprising to demand the overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood and the government allied to Ennahda, protesters blamed Mechichi for failing to manage the political crisis and the coronavirus outbreak.
