World Food Basket… The Sudan conflict may turn into a UN crisis
After a month of clashes in Sudan, the situation is getting worse than ever. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the army are clashing everywhere in Sudan, and the Sudanese people are suffering.
Just a month ago, Sudan was going through a difficult economic climate, which eventually led to political crises that began after the Sudanese people’s revolt against al-Bashir in 2019. Hence, the clash between the two largest military forces in Sudan.
Conflict and asylum
With the start of the conflict, many Sudanese nationals have begun to seek refuge in neighboring countries including South Sudan, Chad and Egypt, leading to severe economic crises in those countries.
The UN has projected that the number of refugees in other countries will reach one million this year if the war between the two sides continues. The UN also said $3.03 billion would be needed to provide urgent aid.
Ramesh Raja Singham, director of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva, said during a press conference that as a result of the war, some 25 million people, more than half of Sudan’s population, are in need of humanitarian assistance.
The Sudanese people suffer from a severe shortage of basic needs of food, water and medicine, which threatens a major crisis inside Sudan, which was called the world food basket.
Ramesh Raja also warned that the situation in Sudan could quickly turn into a “regional crisis”, with funding levels weakening as needs mount.
Most countries in the world suffered economic crises due to the Russo-Ukrainian war, which eventually led to international economic crises, as well as the coronavirus, which shut down the world.
UN Warnings
The UN said $2.56 billion would now be required to provide assistance inside Sudan, up from $1.75 billion a few months ago.
Another $470.4 million will be needed to help those who have fled the country to neighboring countries.
“In a month of clashes, more than 800 people have been killed and 5,000 injured, hundreds have been missing and unaccounted for, and the conflict has forced some 200,000 people to flee to neighboring countries, leaving 700,000 internally displaced.”
“So far, the conflicting parties have failed to reach a durable truce that would allow much-needed humanitarian aid to be delivered, despite the fact that they signed a preliminary agreement of principles last week in Jeddah under US-Saudi auspices.”
