Yemeni President Calls for International Firmness against Houthi Wasting of Peace Opportunities.. Details

The Houthi militias remain intransigent to international and UN efforts to renew and expand a truce in Yemen as a prelude to launching a negotiating process to end the coup, the Presidential Command Council (PSC) called on the international community on Sunday to press the Houthi militias for a de-escalation and not to miss the chances for peace.

In a statement, the member of the Presidential Command Council said that he met with British Ambassador to Yemen Richard Oppenheim and discussed the latest political, economic, military and humanitarian developments, the continuation of the Houthi militias military escalation on various fronts, the repeated attacks on vital economic installations, and the repercussions on the national economy, the humanitarian situation and the peace process.

During the meeting, held in the Saudi capital Riyadh, Al-Arada affirmed “the Yemeni political leadership’s commitment to the option of peace despite the behavior of the Houthi militias that reject it.”

“The international community must have a clear and firm stance against the Houthis,” al-Arada said in a statement. “They should also condemn their repeated attacks on economic establishments.”

According to the statement, the British ambassador affirmed his country’s “continued support for the Yemeni government, condemnation of terrorist acts, and action to support and enhance security and stability in Yemen.”

Since the beginning of the year, UN and regional efforts to renew the truce and work towards a comprehensive political settlement to the conflict in Yemen have intensified.

“Al-Arada’s statements reflect the failure of Oman’s mediation efforts to advance the peace process, as the Houthi group imposes further conditions and moves on the ground, whether by mobilizing its elements on the battlefronts or by deliberately imposing changes in areas under its control, thereby consolidating its authority as a matter of fact.”

Yemeni government Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani tweeted, “We condemn in the strongest terms the Houthis’ military campaign to carry out organized looting of real estate, land and farms in the neighborhoods of al-Rawdha and Asr in the kidnapped capital Sana’a, and the directorates of Hamdan, Saraf and Beni Matar in Sana’a Governorate, which reached its peak during the past three months.”

“The systematic looting and plundering of land and real estate by the Houthis, claimed by the state, the endowments and rulings issued by judges and courts under their control, are part of their plan to bring about demographic change by displacing and displacing citizens in those areas and settling their elements coming from Saada Province,” al-Eryani added.

The Houthi militias continue to reject all international and UN efforts to bring peace, escalating their violations of the existing truce, intensifying their attacks on the freedoms of the population in areas under their control, plundering institutional resources, and recruiting children, in parallel with their leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi threatening to repeat terrorist attacks on oil export ports.

A six-month truce between the internationally recognized government and the Houthi group ended in early October, amid repeated international and UN efforts to broker a ceasefire in Yemen.

Yemen has been ravaged by a war since the end of 2014 between forces loyal to the legitimate government backed by a Saudi-led military coalition and the Iranian-backed Houthi group.
