1.6 Million Affected by Unsafe Food Daily… Children Are the Biggest Victims

A World Health Organization (WHO) official revealed that 1.6 million people worldwide suffer daily due to the consumption of unsafe food.

Speaking at a press conference in Geneva on Friday to mark World Food Safety Day, Dr. Francesco Branca, Director of the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety at WHO, stated that children under the age of five bear about 40% of the burden of foodborne diseases.

Dr. Branca added that the risks threatening food safety do not recognize borders. In the context of an increasingly interconnected global food supply, the risks posed by unsafe food can quickly evolve from a local problem to an international emergency.

He also pointed out that humanitarian crises in many parts of the world lead to food insecurity and jeopardize food safety.
