3 Years Since the Overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Rule: Tunisia Steadily Marches Towards the Future

On Thursday, July 25, Tunisia celebrates the third anniversary of the birth of the new Tunisian republic, established after the overthrow of the Muslim Brotherhood‘s rule.

On July 25, Tunisia celebrates Republic Day, founded on the same day in 1957 after the end of the monarchy and the rule of the Beys, under the leadership of the late President Habib Bourguiba.

On the same date in 2021, Tunisia overthrew the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood through a series of exceptional measures announced by President Kais Saied: the suspension of the parliament led by the head of the Ennahdha Movement, Rached Ghannouchi, the dismissal of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, and the lifting of immunity from the deputies, followed by the dissolution of the parliament on March 30, 2022.

Observers believe that July 25, 2021, was a date for saving Tunisia, which had been violated by the hands of the Brotherhood, tortured its people, bankrupted its economy, and plunged it into a spiral of violence and assassinations.

Tunisian political analyst Mohamed Al-Maidani said, “The Ennahdha Movement has ended in Tunisia, especially after its leader Rached Ghannouchi was imprisoned and a detention order was issued against its secretary-general Ajmi Lourimi on Wednesday.”

He confirmed that on July 25, 2021, thousands of Tunisians demonstrated and burned the offices of the Ennahdha Party, demanding the closure of the Brotherhood’s parliament and holding its leaders accountable, which President Kais Saied responded to by announcing exceptional measures that removed the Brotherhood’s parliament.

He continued: “Those decisions were like a lifeline for the Tunisian people, which was evident from their celebrations of liberation from the Brotherhood, coming out into the streets with their cars and raising Tunisian flags just minutes after taking them, chanting ‘Ghannouchi the butcher, soul killer.'”

He added that July 25 is ingrained in the minds of Tunisians as a date symbolizing freedom and liberation, beginning in 1957 with the overthrow of the monarchy and the regime of the Beys that bankrupted the country, mortgaged it, and brought French colonization under the name of the protectorate in 1881, and the same date when the country got rid of ten years of Brotherhood rule.

He stated that since July 25, 2021, Tunisia has embarked on a national liberation battle against corruption, monopoly, the crime of the Brotherhood, and their dominance within the state, adding that “the next stage will be the liberation of the economy, support for the investment system, and economic and social stability.”
