36 Killed in Road Collapse in Southern China
Thirty-six people were killed and 30 others injured on Thursday when part of a highway collapsed in Guangdong province, causing several vehicles to fall, according to Chinese media.
This tragic incident comes as millions of people travel across the country to celebrate the May 1 holiday in different cities.
China’s Xinhua news agency reported that the collapse, caused by heavy rains, occurred around 2:10 a.m. Wednesday on the Mitu-Dapu expressway.
The Chinese agency added that the collapsed section measured 17.9 meters long and resulted in the fall of 23 vehicles.
Mitu is an area in Guangdong province, southern China, which has suffered severe damage due to heavy rains and cold weather since late April, resulting in serious mudslides and flooding homes and destroying bridges.
