6 dead in plane crash in Russia’s Far East

Six people aboard an aging Antonov AN-26 transport plane that crashed in Russia’s Far East have been killed, the Russian Emergency Ministry said.

“The plane, which Russia’s TASS news agency said that was owned by a 42-year-old company carrying out technical examinations at Russian airports, disappeared from radar screens on Wednesday.”

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the wreckage was found in an inaccessible area and a rescue team had been traversing rough terrain for more than five hours to reach.

“Unfortunately, no one survived the crash,” the ministry said in a statement.

Aviation safety standards in Russia have improved in recent years, but accidents continue to occur, especially obsolete aircraft accidents.

Last July, 28 people were killed aboard an Antonov AN-26 twin-engine plane that crashed in Kamchatka in the far East of the country.
