Yemeni presidential calls for lifting the Houthi siege on Taiz
Yemen’s Presidential Council on Saturday urged the Houthi militias to urgently lift the brutal seven-year siege of the city of Taiz.
President Rashad al-Alimi chaired a meeting of the Presidential Command Council Saturday, attended by council members Aidarous al-Zubaidi, Tarek Saleh, Abdullah al-Alimi, Othman Majli and Abdul Rahman al-Mahrami, the official Saba agency reported.
The meeting discussed the topics on its agenda in the political, military, security, economic and service aspects, and adopted a number of resolutions on the topics regarding a number of current issues in the national arena.
The Yemeni Presidential Council reiterated its adherence to the UN-backed humanitarian truce, which entered its fourth week, stressing the need to urgently lift the Houthi siege on Taiz and all Yemeni cities.
The Council affirmed its support for the UN efforts led by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, to bring about peace and end the suffering of Yemenis.
Earlier on Tuesday, the head of the Presidential Command Council revealed that Houthi militias were still refraining from naming their representatives to the Special Committee for the Opening of Crossings in Taiz, as stipulated in the UN-sponsored truce initiative that has been in effect in Yemen since April 2.
The Council rejected the fragmentation of the humanitarian truce by the Houthi militias, stressing that economic and humanitarian measures are subject to full compliance with the ceasefire, the lifting of the unjust siege on the city of Taiz and the payment of salaries to employees in the areas controlled by the coup.
Former Yemeni president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi handed over power in April to the Leadership Council, which represents various powers, following consultations between the Yemeni parties in Riyadh under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
