Yemen’s Presidential Council announces formation of Security and Military Committee
Yemen’s Supreme Military and Security Committee have been formed, and former Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Haitham Taher has been appointed chairman, the Yemeni presidential command council announced Monday.
The Presidential Command Council, meeting under the chairmanship of Council President Rashad al-Alimi, approved Monday the formation of a joint security and military committee to achieve security and stability and the restructuring of the armed and security forces, according to Article 5 of the Declaration on the Transfer of Authority in Yemen, the official Saba news agency reported.
Members of the Presidential Council agreed to form a 59-member military and security committee headed by Major General Haitham Taher, Major General Taher Ali Al-Aqili as deputy, and Brigadier General Hussein Al-Hayal as rapporteur. They also agreed to form a committee to evaluate and restructure the intelligence services.
The Presidential Council affirmed that these committees are carrying out their duties in achieving security and stability and adopting policies that ensure the integration of all military and security forces under a unified national command, in the service of the battle to restore the state and protect the gains of the current national consensus with the support of the brothers in the countries of the Alliance for the Support of Legitimacy led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Article 5 of the transfer of power declaration states that “a joint security and military committee shall be formed to achieve security and stability by adopting policies that would prevent any armed confrontations throughout the republic, create the conditions and take the necessary steps to achieve the integration of forces under a unified national command structure within the framework of the rule of law”.
It is responsible for “ending the division in the armed forces and addressing its causes, ending all armed conflicts, and developing a national doctrine for members of the army and security services, and any tasks the council deems necessary to promote stability and security”, according to the same declaration.
The formation of the military and security committee is a severe blow to the terrorist organizations of al-Qaeda and ISIS, as well as to the Iranian-backed Houthi coup, as it will diversify deterrents and put an end to terrorism and the putschists together.
Former Yemeni president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi handed over power to the leadership council, which represents various powers, in April after consultations in Riyadh under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
