A lawyer: 33 people, including Rached Ghannouchi, charged with terrorism

The Tunisian judiciary on Tuesday formally charged 33 people, including Ennahdha leader Rached Ghannouchi, with “belonging to a terrorist organization” over the assassination of prominent Tunisian dissidents.

Iman Qazara, a lawyer and member of the defense team in the assassination case of Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi, told Tunis Afrique Presse that 33 people, including the head of the Ennahdha Movement, Rached Ghannouchi, have been charged with belonging to a terrorist organization.

The first investigating judge in the 23rd Anti-Terrorism Judicial Bureau charged the defendants with belonging to a terrorist organization, money laundering and 17 other charges, she said.

The judge of the investigation in the Court of First Instance in Ariana issued a travel ban on Rached Ghannouchi, regarding the file of the secret party apparatus, following the case submitted by the defense of the two martyrs, Chokri Belaid and Mohamed ny7Brahmi.

Eleven years ago, Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi were among those whose voices were raised under the parliament and in the Tunisian street in a strong campaign against the Brotherhood’s incursion and their threat to the modern civil state.

Belaid and Brahmi, two prominent opponents of the Ennahdha-led government in the 2011 elections, were assassinated by gunmen in front of their residence.

Years ago, the defense of Belaid and Brahmi confirmed that they had provided sufficient evidence since February 2019, proving that Rached Ghannouchi was behind the political assassinations in Tunisia in 2013.
