“Leave” – The people of the South Tunisian expel Ghannouchi

Ghannouchi had already stated in 2019 that Ennahdha did not need to organize an election campaign in the southern governorates (7 out of 24) as guaranteed.

The seven governorates are Sfax, Gabes, Medenine, Tataouine, Kabylie, Tozeur, and Gafsa, which have 2.6 million inhabitants out of a total of 10 million Tunisians, while their representatives in the Tunisian Parliament occupy 53 out of 217 seats, or about a quarter of the seats.

Election stations in Tunisia since 2011 have shown that southern Tunisia was the Brotherhood’s electoral reservoir, with Ennahdha winning the majority of parliamentary seats allocated to electoral districts in those regions.

In the 2011 elections, Ennahdha won 89 seats, with the highest voter turnout in the southern governorates at 3 out of 4 in Tataouine Governorate, while in Medenine Governorate it won 5 out of 9 and 4 out of 7 in Gabes District.
