Tunisian President Kais Saied voted on Monday in a referendum on a new constitution in a move that observers see as turning the page on the Brotherhood’s black decade.

After casting his vote, Saied said his country has lived “in the past years, which is infamous for many jokes and plays. The chapters of the laws were sold and bought and blood was spilled, and the texts were drafted without finding their way to be implemented”.

Freedom is not just a matter of laws or constitutions, but rather a real practice, he said. “What is important today is that the person responsible for this project is accountable to his voters, not to the party that nominated him for the election”.

Saied called on Tunisians to resolve their relationship with the Brotherhood by voting “yes or no” in the referendum.

On Monday morning, polling stations opened for Tunisians to vote on a referendum on the draft of the new constitution, in an event that the country seeks to close the chapter of the Brotherhood.

Some 9,278,541 Tunisian voters were called to vote on the draft constitution, including 348,876 registered voters abroad and 8,929,665 in the country.
