Sudan: Al-Burhan withdraws from mediation between civilians for these reasons
While all parties to the framework agreement insist on reaching a final political agreement with the participation of all parties as soon as possible, Sudanese media announced today, Tuesday, “the withdrawal of the President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, from the mediation between the civil parties seeking to sign a framework agreement.”
The Sudan Tribune website quoted sources as saying: “Chairman of the Sovereignty Council Abdul Fattah al-Burhan decided to abandon the mediation he was leading to bring freedom, change and the democratic bloc closer,” pointing out that the decision of al-Burhan came after he failed to bring the two parties to the same table, despite several attempts made during the past weeks.
The sources clarified that the Freedom and Change Coalition refuses to recognize the democratic bloc, and says that it is made.
The Joint Coordinating Committee of the Parties to the Framework Agreement and the Tripartite Mechanism continue to meet to discuss the remaining 4 issues in the final phase of the political process.
According to the Sudanese News Agency, the official spokesman for the political process, Engineer Khaled Omar Yousif, said that the last meeting heard the perceptions of activities related to peace and eastern Sudan.
He added that the general plan was approved by the tripartite mechanism to advocate and facilitate the work of the two events, to ensure the broadest possible participation of stakeholders and the forces of the December revolution, adding that the aim of the two events is to strengthen the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement for the Sudan by removing political and practical obstacles to it.
It also aims to lay the right foundations for addressing the issues of eastern Sudan, stabilizing the region, encompassing a solution, providing justice to its citizens and removing all forms of marginalization from it.
Meanwhile, the UN-AU-IGAD Tripartite Mechanism announced the resumption of workshops to discuss the Juba peace file, leading to a roadmap to end the protracted political crisis in Sudan.
The aim of the move is to find practical ways to implement and revive the Juba agreement, not to undermine it, she said in a tweet, calling for broad participation in the workshop to translate peace into reality.
Last December, the political forces and the military component signed a framework agreement to establish a civilian transitional authority in Sudan, and to end the more than a year-long political crisis.
Despite the auspicious start, the stalemate in the political process came after political forces affiliated with the Democratic Bloc rejected the agreement, in a position also adopted by the Sudanese Communist Party, the Resistance Committees, and the Arab Socialist Baath Party, a key component of the Declaration of Freedom and Change Forces, the Central Council.
At the beginning of this current January, the head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, led a mediation to bridge the gap in political positions between the three Freedom and Change Blocs, which is the Central Council, the Democratic Bloc, and the National Forces.
