Houthis Close Religious Centers That Disagree with Their Doctrine in Three Governorates


The Houthi group has once again targeted various religious science centers that do not align with its doctrine in the areas under its control by launching raids and closure campaigns to transform these centers into places for propaganda and sectarian dissemination.

According to a report from the newspaper “Asharq Al-Awsat,” the group’s recent campaigns have targeted three centers for Islamic sciences and Quranic schools belonging to the “Salafi” and “Da’wah and Tabligh” groups in the governorates of Ibb. Hodeidah, and Amran, after the officials in charge refused directives forcing them to disseminate propaganda and teach “Khomeini lessons.”

The latest targeting involved armed Houthi groups storming the “Shafi’i” center for religious sciences affiliated with the “Salafi group” in the Mater area of Ibb governorate. Yemen (193 kilometers south of Sanaa).

Local sources confirmed to “Asharq Al-Awsat” that the raid and takeover were conducted on the orders of Houthi leader Ahmed al-Asari. who was appointed by the group as the director of the guidance office.

During the raid, Houthi militants expelled about 85 students who were studying religious sciences and participating in Quranic circles before closing the center permanently in preparation to convert it and its annexes into places for incitement to violence and spreading hatred.

Teachers and students condemned the Houthis‘ targeting of their center and other buildings affiliated with it. Some teachers reported, according to the same source, that the group seeks to complete its control over what remains of centers and Quranic houses in Ibb and other cities under its control to transform them into centers for promoting its ideas alien to Yemenis.

Prior to this, the main center belonging to the “Da’wah and Tabligh” group in Hodeidah governorate (west) had been raided and closed. expelling 500 of its students and replacing them with Houthi followers brought in from other areas.

The “Da’wah and Tabligh” group in Yemen is known for its non-involvement in politics or social conflicts. with its members active in preaching and conducting religious lessons after prayers in mosques of the cities and villages they visit.

Additionally, Houthi militants stormed a center for teaching religious sciences and closed another mosque belonging to the “Tabligh group” in the Masour and Khamer areas of Amran governorate, kidnapping dozens of students and teachers to force them to abandon their missionary work.

The Houthi group has reportedly agreed to release the detainees and allow them to resume their work on the condition that they commit to promoting its ideas and assist it in mobilization and recruitment for the fronts. but this was met with outright refusal from them.

Human rights activists have condemned the Houthis‘ violations against religious science centers and their officials in various areas under the group’s control. describing the group’s actions as “crimes and abuses that do not fall under the statute of limitations.”

In the past, the Houthi insurgents have waged a fierce war over the past years against various religious centers and Quranic houses.aiming to transform them into centers for propaganda and teaching sectarian-oriented lessons.
