Yemeni Analyst Reveals Ongoing Houthi Crimes against the People of Taiz

In a scene that reflects the horrors of the ongoing war in Yemen, Houthi militias continue to commit blatant violations against civilians in the governorate of Taiz, in the southwest of Yemen, one of the areas most affected by the conflict that has been ongoing since 2014. Despite the relative calm observed in some parts of Yemen, Taiz remains under the constant threat of Houthi attacks, in addition to the organized looting of public and private properties.

Human Rights Condemnation

Yemeni human rights reports have revealed that the looting of homes and businesses in Taiz is one of the most prominent practices affecting the city. Houthi militias steal foodstuffs and essential goods from markets and seize private property from homes, exacerbating the suffering of civilians in a region already facing severe shortages of basic supplies due to the blockade imposed for years.

A report by Human Rights Watch indicated that the Houthi militias have used heavy weapons in residential areas, resulting in numerous civilian casualties, in addition to the destruction of vital facilities such as hospitals and schools. Other reports confirm that the Houthis have intimidated journalists and civilians who tried to highlight the violations taking place in Taiz.

Ongoing Violations

Ahmed Jabari, a Yemeni human rights activist, revealed that several human rights organizations have documented numerous violations involving large-scale looting, with both large and small businesses being looted. These violations even affected businesses that had been recently restored after being destroyed in a previous conflict.

He added that, in addition to looting, Houthi violations in Taiz include many other issues, such as the imposition of illegal taxes on civilians, arbitrary arrests of activists and journalists, and assaults on freedom of expression. The Houthi militias also continue to shut down many local newspapers and media websites critical of their actions, deepening the plight of independent journalism in the region.

Crushing Suffering

He pointed out that these violations are further complicating the humanitarian situation in Taiz, where the population is suffering from a dire humanitarian crisis. Civilians are unable to access humanitarian aid due to the blockade, while the ongoing looting by the Houthis deprives them of essential supplies such as food and medicine. Additionally, the poor security situation has made it impossible for many humanitarian organizations to reach civilians in conflict areas.

He clarified that the violations committed by the Houthis in Taiz are part of a series of actions reflecting the chaos and violence that the Yemeni people are enduring due to the ongoing war. Through continuous looting, the arrest of civilians, and the destruction of infrastructure, the suffering of the people of Taiz is intensifying, and the city remains under constant threat, with no quick solutions in sight to end the conflict and restore peace and security to the region.
