Jordan: Release of 16 detainees in the sedition issue


About the sedition case, Jordan’s prosecutor has liberated 16 prisoners at the directives of King Abdullah II, while two important suspects were kept. The King replied to the call of many tribes from Jordanian governorates that asking him to express tolerance towards their loved ones.

The Royal Court published a statement, after the gathering, announcing that the King said to the concerned officials to follow the appropriate legal way, to liberate those misled, wronged, dragged behind this sedition, for they could be with family as soon as possible during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

The King also called the recent events as painful, affirming that if the sedition has not been stopped, it could have taken the country in a difficult direction. He also emphasized his confidence in the kingdom’s institutions, noting that his responsibilities are for serving and protecting the people and the country.

Indeed, the case was about the conspiracy to destabilize the country launched previously this month that was obstructed by the authorities. It was suspected that the King’s half-brother, Prince Hamza, was involved in the case.

Two important suspects still at the detention

Authorities detained 18 people suspect of seeking to destabilize the Kingdom and gave their case to the court after finishing the final steps of the investigation.

On Thursday, State Prosecutor General Hazem al-Majali stated that the former royal court chief, Bassem Awadallah, and Sharif Hassan bin Zaid would still in arrest. He also explained that they were not liberated because of their different roles, the type of their accusation, and the level of sedition that varies from the last of the suspects who were released.

Previously, the prosecutor finished the investigations about the recent events, indicating that they formed a clear threat to the security and stability of the Kingdom. The Military Court would fix a date soon for the court of Awadallah and bin Zaid after that they were excluded from the royal forgiveness.
