A horrendous rape rocks India… The perpetrators are 33 men

India recorded one of the most egregious crimes, when 33 men took turns raping a 15-year-old girl, a minor, sparking outrage in the country.

An Indian police official said that the crime took place in different parts of Thane district in Maharashtra state, western India, over an eight-month period.

Police arrested 24 people in connection with the crime, including two minors, The Times of India reported.

According to local reports, the girl is in stable condition and is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital.

The crime angered residents in the province, where crowds gathered outside a police station holding the men accused of the case, and police deployed more troops for fear of storming the headquarters.

Indian authorities in Maharashtra state have filed a case against 33 men for rape, repeated rape, gang rape and rape of a minor.

The crimes took place between January 29th and September 22nd this year, it said. The story began this January when the girl was raped by her friend, who documented the incident on video and then began blackmailing her by posting the video.

Later, his friends and acquaintances took turns raping the girl on several occasions and in different places.

India amended its rape laws after a mass rape incident in the capital New Delhi in 2012, but the number of crimes remains high, with more than 28,000 rape cases reported in 2020, according to the British Daily Mail.

The actual number is likely to be much higher, as many cases are not reported due to social stigma and distrust of authorities figures.
