A royal vision resetting the compass of peace in the Middle East
The message of the King of Morocco to the United Nations was not merely a political stance but a document outlining a realistic approach to rebuilding the peace process after years of paralysis.
In his letter to the Chair of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, King Mohammed VI presented an integrated strategic vision that reflects Morocco’s enduring commitment to the Palestinian cause while strengthening the kingdom’s position as a credible mediator and key actor in regional and international peace efforts.
The message was not just a political statement but a document carrying the elements of a pragmatic approach to restoring a long-stalled peace process, benefiting from the momentum created by the recent ceasefire in Gaza.
The King reaffirmed that the Palestinian cause remains central and just, and that any renewed negotiations must be conducted within clear parameters and defined timelines, avoiding crisis-management approaches that have only prolonged the conflict. This reference reflects a precise analysis: the current developments represent a pivotal moment that must be seized, and any failure to capitalize on it would push the region back into recurring cycles of violence.
While expressing particular appreciation for the personal involvement of US President Donald Trump in securing the ceasefire after two years of devastating war in Gaza, King Mohammed VI highlighted the role of regional and international mediators and affirmed Morocco’s readiness to contribute actively to all upcoming phases.
This direction reflects a Moroccan diplomacy that goes beyond moral stances and advances through concrete actions that support peace and reinforce the kingdom’s role as a bridge between different actors.
In outlining the foundations of a political settlement, the King presented a comprehensive vision reasserting the pillars of the two-state solution within a realistic and actionable framework. He emphasized that the unity of the West Bank and Gaza under the administration of the Palestinian Authority is essential for the establishment of a future Palestinian state. He also stressed the importance of supporting the Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas and strengthening its political, financial, and administrative institutions as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people in any final agreement.
The message included a clear call to lift restrictions suffocating the Palestinian economy and to allow free movement of goods and people, highlighting that improving living and economic conditions is not only a humanitarian issue but a crucial element in sustaining any political solution.
Similarly, the King stressed the importance of Palestinian reconciliation under the umbrella of the Palestine Liberation Organization, as a guarantee of national unity and negotiating capacity.
On the issue of Jerusalem, one of the most sensitive files, King Mohammed VI reiterated Morocco’s role as Chair of the Al-Quds Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, highlighting the balance between diplomatic action and field initiatives carried out by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Acharif Agency.
He warned that ongoing unilateral Israeli policies and violations at the Holy Sanctuary could lead to a religious confrontation threatening the entire region—an alert based on a realistic reading of the continuous escalation.
Beyond politics, the message shed light on the significant humanitarian support Morocco has provided to Palestinians over the past two years. The kingdom sent five aid shipments since October 2023, including an air bridge carrying nearly 300 tons of food and medical supplies, transported through an unprecedented land route into Gaza. This support reflects Morocco’s alignment between political discourse and concrete humanitarian action.
The letter also noted the growing international momentum for recognizing the Palestinian state, affirming that this global shift must serve as a real lever to revive the two-state solution.
In this context, Morocco hosted in May 2025 the fifth meeting of the international coalition tasked with implementing the two-state solution, reinforcing Rabat’s position as a regional actor capable of bringing parties together and supporting emerging diplomatic dynamics.
A careful reading of the royal message reveals a Moroccan vision based on political realism and a deep understanding that the two-state solution is no longer a negotiable option but an urgent necessity dictated by humanitarian, security, political, and geographical realities. This vision provides the international community with a balanced framework that combines steadfast principles with practical pathways and places Morocco at the center of efforts to build a more stable Middle East and ensure the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights.
