“A Russian Seat” in the Nuclear File… Talks with Iran’s Ambassador

Russian-Iranian discussions on international efforts regarding Iran’s nuclear program took place two days after Moscow agreed to mediate between Tehran and Washington.

On Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov had discussed with Iranian Ambassador Kazem Jalali the international efforts aimed at resolving the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.

The ministry stated that their meeting was held the previous day, on Thursday.

Mediation

Two days ago, the Russian channel Zvezda and the American news agency Bloomberg reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to act as a mediator between the United States and Iran regarding its nuclear program.

According to Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources described as “knowledgeable about the situation,” former U.S. President Donald Trump had directly expressed his interest in Russian mediation during a phone call with Putin on February 12.

The topic was reportedly later discussed during a meeting between the foreign ministries of both countries in Saudi Arabia, according to the same sources.

In mid-February, Saudi Arabia hosted high-level negotiations between the foreign ministers of Russia and the United States.
