After a series of crises, Boris Johnson announces his resignation as Conservative leader

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Conservative Party – and his remaining as head of government – saying: It is “painful not to be able to complete a lot of projects and ideas”, Johnson’s resignation came after dozens of members of his party resigned from the government after a moral scandal, as his popularity outside parliament was also severely affected by rising inflation and recession in the British economy, a cost-of-living crisis that threatens to impoverish millions this winter, and the risk of a devastating trade war with the European Union.

CNN, the American network, confirmed that what happened in Britain was very chaotic. Johnson had mishandled more than one moral scandal, which was enough to end his career. In addition to the dire condition of the British economy, which suffers from high performance and is likely to enter a recession, while the Bank of England refuses to raise interest rates strongly to deal with rising inflation. Johnson had no choice but to step down after several prominent members of his government resigned in protest of his handling of allegations of misconduct related to government officials, and dozens of members of his government resigned, after only three years in office.

Conservative MPs in the British Parliament said Johnson should be replaced immediately, rather than allowed to serve until the fall.

Several figures, including former Conservative Prime Minister Sir John Major, have called on Johnson to leave his job as prime minister immediately.

Criticism

According to the US network, this scandal was the final straw for many of the political allies who supported Johnson in all crises during his three years in power. In recent months, the Prime Minister was facing a barrage of criticism from all sides over his conduct and the behavior of his government, including the Partygate scandal which violated the closure laws. Johnson also faced many other scandals which affected his position at the ballot box, despite his overwhelming victory in the general elections with 80 seats. These include accusations of improper use of donor funds to pay for the cost of renovating his house in Downing Street.

It went on to say that two weeks ago, the Conservatives lost a major by-election – results that Johnson was personally blamed for. In early June, he survived the no-confidence vote, but the final count of MPs who rebelled against him was higher than his supporters expected, with 41% of his MPs refusing to support him.
