Among them a commander… fatalities among Popular Mobilization Forces in an airstrike in western Iraq


Casualties were reported following an airstrike that targeted a site belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Anbar province, western Iraq.

Security sources told Reuters on Tuesday that airstrikes targeted a position affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces in Anbar province, resulting in the deaths of several PMF members, including the commander of PMF operations in the province, in addition to others being wounded.

Security and medical sources told Reuters that the strikes killed at least 15 fighters, including the PMF operations commander in the province, and wounded 30 others.

In a statement, the Popular Mobilization Forces confirmed the death of Anbar operations commander Saad al-Bouaiji and accused the United States of carrying out the attack. It said that a U.S. airstrike targeted “the command headquarters while they were performing their national duty.”

No official statement has been issued by the U.S. military regarding the strike.

The Popular Mobilization Forces include under their umbrella paramilitary factions, most of them Shiite, which have been officially integrated into the Iraqi security forces and include several groups loyal to Iran.

Iran-backed armed groups have been carrying out attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.
