An Iranian aggression against Kuwait raises doubts about the two-week truce

Kuwaiti defenses announced that they intercepted drones that violated the country’s airspace and targeted several vital facilities, on the second day of the two-week truce between Iran and the United States.

On Thursday evening, Kuwait announced that vital facilities had been targeted by drone attacks described as “hostile,” in a development reflecting the fragility of the declared truce between the United States and Iran, and raising questions about the parties’ ability to adhere to de-escalation.

The Kuwaiti army stated in a communiqué that air defenses were dealing with drones that had breached the country’s airspace and targeted several vital facilities, without providing further details regarding the nature of the targets or the extent of the damage. This announcement came only hours after a previous statement confirming that no operational developments had been recorded over the past twenty-four hours, indicating a notable acceleration in the pace of events.

The Kuwaiti National Guard, for its part, announced that one of its sites had been attacked by drones, resulting in significant material damage without any human casualties. Its official spokesperson, Brigadier Jadaan Fadel, confirmed that forces immediately took the necessary security and field measures, emphasizing the National Guard’s readiness and its continued performance of duties within the framework of protecting vital facilities.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed strong condemnation of the “attacks carried out by Iran and its proxies through drones targeting several vital facilities in Kuwait.” In a statement, it said that “the continuation of these blatant attacks against Kuwait and the countries of the region undermines the regional and international efforts that recently resulted in the announcement of a ceasefire,” adding that “these attacks constitute a blatant challenge to the international community.” The ministry stressed the need “to compel Iran and its proxies to immediately and unconditionally cease all hostile actions directed toward Kuwait and the countries of the region.” No immediate comment was issued by Tehran in this regard.

These developments come on the second day of a two-week truce announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, intended to open the way for negotiations aimed at ending the war that broke out on February 28 between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other.

However, field realities indicate the continuation of attacks, as Gulf countries were targeted on the first day of the truce by a series of strikes involving 141 missiles and drones, distributed across the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

Data indicate that the total number of attacks since the beginning of the war has exceeded 6,000 missiles and drones, causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, including airports, ports, and energy facilities.

Although Tehran maintains that its attacks target what it describes as American interests and bases in the region, some of these strikes have hit civilian facilities and caused human losses, further complicating the regional situation. No clear explanation has been provided regarding the continuation of attacks despite the truce announcement, putting the credibility of the agreement at stake.

Washington linked the continuation of the ceasefire to specific conditions, most notably the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, along with mutual commitment to halting military operations. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also announced that negotiations with the United States would begin in Islamabad in an attempt to reach a final agreement.

The attacks targeting Kuwait demonstrate the persistence of tensions despite the truce, raising serious questions about the future of de-escalation and confirming that the diplomatic path remains fragile in the face of rapid field developments that could return the region to escalation at any moment.
