Anxiety and sleep disturbances: New symptoms for Coronavirus Variant “JN.1”

The National Statistics Office in the United Kingdom has announced the discovery of two new variants of the novel coronavirus, named “JN.1.”

According to the “timesofindia” website, the new coronavirus variant presents symptoms of sleep disturbances and anxiety, in addition to the previously known symptoms, including runny nose, cough, headache, and weakness.

It was mentioned that the symptoms of the “JN.1” variant resemble other coronavirus symptoms, including fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and loss of taste and smell.

The National Statistics Office in the United Kingdom pointed out that infection with the new variant is associated with increased levels of stress and anxiety, leading to an increase in sleep disturbances, making it challenging for individuals to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Good sleep is linked to boosting the immune system, so addressing sleep disturbances associated with the coronavirus is crucial for public health, especially with the new variant spreading at a faster pace than previous variants.

Professor and Chair of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University at Buffalo in New York, Dr. Thomas Russo, described the new variant “JN.1” as having a mutation in the spike protein, making it more elusive than the original coronavirus.
