AstraZeneca Begins Withdrawing COVID-19 Vaccine Worldwide
AstraZeneca announced on Tuesday that it has started withdrawing its COVID-19 vaccine from all over the world due to “excess available doses” since the onset of the pandemic.
The company also stated that it would commence withdrawing marketing licenses for the Vaxzevria vaccine within Europe, as per Reuters.
The company added that “with the development of multiple COVID-19 vaccines since then, there is an excess of available doses,” indicating that this has led to a decreased demand for Vaxzevria, which is no longer manufactured or supplied.
According to media reports, the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company had previously acknowledged in court documents that the vaccine caused side effects such as blood clots and a decrease in blood platelet count.
The request to withdraw the vaccine was filed on March 5th and went into effect on Tuesday, according to The Telegraph, which was the first to report on these developments.
AstraZeneca, listed in London, has begun transitioning to other vaccines and obesity treatment drugs through several agreements last year after a slowdown in sales growth of COVID-19 treatments.
