Australian sanctions against Iran in response to human rights violations and the war in Ukraine

The official website of the Australian Foreign Ministry said: Sydney has decided to impose targeted financial sanctions on 14 Iranian entities responsible for egregious human rights violations in Iran.

Morality Police

Among those subject to human rights sanctions are four members of Iran’s morality police who were responsible for the arrest, detention and mistreatment of a security professional.

Targets under sanctions also include senior law enforcement, political and military figures, including within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who have participated in the violent suppression of protests after the death of young Amini and the ongoing repression of the Iranian people, the statement added.

Iranian killer aircraft

Australia is joining its partners in imposing additional targeted financial sanctions, travel bans on 13 Iranian individuals, and targeted financial sanctions on a single entity involved in the production and supply of drones to Russia.

Russia has used Iranian-made drones to target Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure, and this list makes clear that there will be consequences for those providing material support to Russia.

The statement expressed Australia’s support for the people of Iran and the people of Ukraine.

Western accusations

The West publicly accuses Iran of selling drones or even missiles to Russia, allegations that can sometimes be substantiated while remaining at other times mere speculation, but suggests a strategy that serves Tehran’s interests in several ways.

Iranian negation

This is denied by Iran, which has been severely sanctioned by the international community over its nuclear program and is being harshly criticized for its ongoing crackdown on protests.
