Bashagha’s Govt Calls on Libya’s GNU to Resign

Libya’s government of stability, headed by Fathi Bashagha, called on the rival interim Government of National Unity (GNU), headed by Abdulhamid al-Dbeibeh, to resign.

The demand was made shortly after GNU health minister Ali al-Zayati resigned.

Bashagha’s health ministry hailed the development, saying Zayati had taken an “honorable national stance”.

“He showed commitment and respect to local institutions and legislative authorities,” it said in a statement on Friday.

It called on the remaining ministers in the GNU to follow suit and step down.

“They must not align themselves with those who have usurped power,” it stated.

“Should they remain in the government, they will answer to history and be held primarily responsible for the division in the country,” it went on to say.

Meanwhile, head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Menfi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Arab-Chinese summit in Riyadh on Friday.

He revealed that Xi had said Chinese companies will resume operations in Libya once security and stability are restored there.

In a brief statement, he added that they held talks on the operation of Chinese companies in Libya and their contributions to the country’s growth.
