Canada Adds Houthis to Terror List: Reasons and Consequences
Canada’s Public Safety Ministry announced last Monday the inclusion of the Houthis on its list of terrorist organizations. This decision came after the militia met the definition of a terrorist entity under Canada’s sanctions law, based on its close ties with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Hezbollah, both of which are already listed as terrorist entities in Canada.

The ministry stated that since November 2023, the Houthi militia has contributed to unrest in the Middle East by launching attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and other waterways, as well as targeting Israel.
Regarding the implications of this designation, the ministry’s statement noted that Houthi members and affiliates will be prohibited from traveling to or entering Canada. Additionally, it will be illegal to engage with or provide any form of direct or indirect support to the group.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc emphasized that adding the Houthis to the terrorist list would strengthen Canada’s efforts in the global fight against terrorism. He affirmed that Canada will continue taking necessary measures to curb the spread of terrorist activities internationally and to address threats to Canada, its citizens, and its global interests.
This marks the fourth such decision in 2024. In January, the U.S. State Department designated the Houthis as a terrorist organization. In March, the Australian government followed suit, and New Zealand took a similar step in late November.

Yemeni Minister of Information Moammar Al-Eryani welcomed Canada’s move, describing it as “significant.” He viewed it as an acknowledgment by the international community of the dangers posed by the Houthis, who execute Iran’s destructive agenda in Yemen and the region, threatening maritime security and the free flow of global trade.
Al-Eryani called on nations worldwide to take similar actions to designate the Houthis as a “terrorist organization.” He stressed that comprehensive international action is the only way to halt the Houthi project orchestrated by Tehran and safeguard maritime security.
