Celebrities and Filters: Escape from reality or obsession with beauty?

Stars and celebrities are always keen to appear in the best light in front of the public, striving to hide any flaws, whether on their faces or bodies, to always present themselves in the best way possible, even if their appearance differs from reality.

Some celebrities resort to plastic surgery, others edit their photos using Photoshop, while others prefer to use the filters provided by social media platforms to hide any skin or facial imperfections.

The “filter” has become an essential feature and an indispensable method for celebrities, and its use is not limited to actresses; some male actors also use it. This is a phenomenon that deserves investigation into the psychological reasons and motives that compel them to appear flawless.

“Eternal Youth”

In this regard, Dr. Saeed Sadeq, a sociology professor at an Egyptian university, stated that the audience of stars and celebrities believes that they enjoy eternal youth and that their features do not change with age. Therefore, they seek to please them by presenting the best images of themselves on social media, according to his statements.

Sadeq added in exclusive statements to “Erem News”: “Celebrities may use filters and Photoshop on their public images on social media to enhance their appearance, maintain a certain image in the public eye, conform to global beauty standards, or simply to present a polished version of themselves to the audience. This can also help them stand out in a competitive industry where appearance often takes center stage.”

The sociology professor continued: “Some politicians and rulers, like Gaddafi and others, also used dyes, facelifts, and more to always appear young, not weak enough to be removed from their positions. Thus, the obsession with filters and appearing younger is not limited to artists. Ordinary people also tend to use them.”

“Financial Loss”

For his part, psychiatrist Dr. Gamal Faraweez believes that celebrities always try to appear younger than their actual age because it keeps them in demand for leading roles; otherwise, they would be cast in smaller roles, such as parental roles. Thus, appearance is “a means of livelihood” for them, as he describes it.

Faraweez added in his interview with “Erem News” that some actors are over fifty years old but still play young roles because if they neglect their appearance, they will lose financially. Therefore, they are keen to appear young to land advertisements and leading roles. No one can blame them, as this is their source of income, and they try to preserve it.

The psychiatrist noted that there are no psychological reasons behind this, explaining that society does not pressure them, but they wish to do so for the aforementioned reasons. He pointed out that the fear of aging and the appearance of signs of old age is something that exists in everyone, even non-celebrities, but it is greater among celebrities and will continue to dominate them throughout their lives.

“Permissible Practice”

Syrian actress Madeline Tabar believes that using filters in artists’ photos is a permissible and favorable practice as long as it remains within reasonable limits and does not alter the person’s features.

She explained to “Erem News”: “We all like to look good, whether a man or a woman. However, excessive use of filters that changes facial features is ridiculous and portrays the artist in a negative light.”

She pointed out that the filter can be “charming,” but it should be used in moderation, adding: “I support using anything that makes you happy and beautiful as long as it doesn’t harm anyone.”

Boussy Shalaby and the Filter

We asked TV presenter Boussy Shalaby, who always uses filters in all the photos and videos she shares on social media, about the reasons that make her keen to use the “filter.” She replied, “We don’t use a filter.”

Boussy Shalaby faced an embarrassing situation with actor Amr Youssef due to the excessive use of a filter in a photo they took together at an artistic event, where the filter was applied to Amr Youssef, making him appear with makeup and long eyelashes.

Amr Youssef commented on the photo at the time, saying, “From the drama festival in El Alamein, I will never take a photo with Boussy Shalaby again.”
