Changes in Muslim Brotherhood Militia Leaders in Yemen: What Lies Behind Them?

The President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, has issued a decision to replace Major General Yahya Abu Awja, commander of the 135th Infantry Brigade under the First Military Region and affiliated with the Al-Islah Party, the Muslim Brotherhood‘s political arm in Yemen. In his place, he appointed Brigadier General Ali Yahya Al-Adimi, who hails from the Hajjah province.

According to the Al-Omanaa Net newspaper, Al-Adimi previously held a high-ranking military position in a brigade affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood in Marib province.

The Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Mohsen Al-Daari, sent a directive to the director of the Command and Control Center, calling for the formation of a committee to oversee the handover process.

The committee’s duties include supervising the transfer of leadership between Major General Saleh Mohammed Tamis, commander of the First Military Region, and his successor, Major General Saleh Al-Juaimlani, as well as between Major General Yahya Abu Awja and his successor, Brigadier General Ali Yahya Al-Adimi.

This decision is expected to provoke widespread dissatisfaction among citizens in Hadhramaut and the south in general, amid growing demands to relocate military forces affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood out of Hadhramaut. There are calls to replace them with Hadhramaut elite forces and to appoint military leaders from the region.

Observers suggest that the Muslim Brotherhood is attempting to placate public anger by changing its representatives. Many also believe that agreements have been reached with the Presidential Council to save face, given the daily opposition faced by decisions from militias affiliated with the Al-Islah Party.
