Chebbi Withdraws Candidacy for Presidential Elections: A New Failure Recorded in the Records of the Muslim Brotherhood

A new failure is recorded in the records of the Muslim Brotherhood in Tunisia, who are seeking to enter the presidential race by any means necessary, in their attempts to return to the political scene after being ousted and thwarting all their destructive plans.

Despite knowing his inability to run, member of the Brotherhood‘s Salvation Front, Issam Chebbi, announced last Tuesday his candidacy from prison for the presidential elections.

Two days after announcing his candidacy, the Republican Party, “a component of the Brotherhood‘s Salvation Front,” announced that it was withdrawing the candidacy of its detained Secretary-General, Issam Chebbi, for the presidential elections in Tunisia scheduled for October 6, after Chebbi’s request for the endorsement document was rejected.

The party confirmed that Chebbi’s lawyer was unable to obtain a special authorization to submit a request to withdraw the form for collecting popular endorsements, which led the party to decide to retract the candidacy.

Observers of the Tunisian political scene believe that Issam Chebbi is aware that he is prohibited from running because he has been imprisoned on charges of conspiracy against state security since February 2023, a charge that carries the death penalty. However, the Brotherhood is adept at playing the victim role, which is why he announced his candidacy and then withdrew it two days later.

For the first time, the Tunisian Election Authority has stipulated the submission of a criminal record, “criminal history record,” among the documents for presidential candidacy.

Tunisian political analyst Mohamed Al-Midani said that Issam Chebbi is well aware that he does not enjoy his civil and political rights as he is a prisoner on a serious charge of conspiracy against state security, planning to overthrow the regime, and plotting a coup against President Kais Saied’s rule.

Al-Midani confirmed that the purpose of the Brotherhood‘s Salvation Front’s nomination of Issam Chebbi was to draw attention and showcase themselves to the international public opinion as innocent victims of tyranny.

He said, “The Brotherhood is very good at the victimhood game, to show that the current regime wants to exclude them from power.”

He confirmed that the Salvation Front forcibly wants to return to the political scene because they believe that the way to reposition and manage public affairs is through the presidency of the state.
