Closure of Famous Ski Resorts in Switzerland… Heat Melts the Snow
The popular ski tracks of “Domaine du Folio” in the Swiss Jura Mountains have been deserted after climate change led to the melting of its snow.
Winter sports enthusiasts have been absent from this unique location, prompting ski resorts across the country to close their doors.
The abandoned ski lift poles swayed in the wind, while small patches of snow amidst yellow grass were visible below.
The United Nations’ international governmental body concerned with climate change stated in a report that temperatures in Switzerland, a major skiing destination, are rising nearly twice the global average, partially due to its mountains trapping heat.
Switzerland’s Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology stated that January was exceptionally warm, with temperatures more than two degrees Celsius above the average between 1990 and 2020.
Christoph Salama, a meteorologist at the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, said, “We’re repeatedly breaking records to the point where we no longer feel it’s exceptional.”
He added, “We haven’t seen unprecedented cold levels in Switzerland for years.”
Winter seems to have almost ended in “Domaine du Folio” at an altitude of over 1400 meters above sea level.
The sky was clear and temperatures were moderate at nine degrees Celsius, much higher than the usual level for January, which typically hovers around minus one degree Celsius.
The coming week is expected to be even warmer at around 11 degrees Celsius.
Mountain Wilderness, a non-governmental organization focused on preserving mountain areas, stated last year that 65 ski lifts had rusted due to the absence of snow and exceptionally high temperatures.
