COP16 Conference: Establishment of a Permanent Body for Indigenous Peoples

Countries participating in the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP16), held in Cali, Colombia, agreed to establish a permanent body for Indigenous peoples to provide consultation on decisions of the international organization dedicated to nature conservation.

The creation of this advisory body is considered a major achievement in recognizing the role Indigenous peoples play in preserving nature globally, including in some of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, according to Indigenous and environmental advocates.

Nearly 200 countries gathered in the city of Cali with the aim of implementing the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which seeks to halt the rapid degradation of nature by 2030.

The advisory body, which will also extend to local communities, will help integrate traditional knowledge and practices into environmental conservation efforts, according to Reuters.

The countries participating in the conference also agreed on a measure recognizing the role of people of African descent in caring for nature, which Colombia said will facilitate these communities’ access to resources for funding biodiversity projects and participating in global environmental discussions.
