Environmentally friendly tourist destinations: Europe’s greenest countries in 2024

Among the data relied upon by travel and tourism companies is the sustainability of tourist destinations, indicating a growing interest in this feature when selecting destinations.

A list has been unveiled of the most sustainable countries in Europe, catering to those interested in visiting a green tourist destination within the continent in 2024.

According to Time Out magazine, this list includes Europe’s greenest countries this year based on data collected through the European Environment Agency, according to a study of several key factors including rates of recycling operations in these countries, and rates of carbon dioxide emissions in the air in these countries.

According to the study’s findings, Norway topped the list as the most sustainable European country for 2024, attributed to the majority of energy generated for daily consumption in Norway coming from renewable, environmentally friendly sources.

In second place on the list is Austria, as one of Europe’s most sustainable countries for 2024 according to the study’s data, nominated for this ranking due to having the highest share of passenger traffic in public transport in Europe.

Finland comes in third on the list as the third most sustainable European country, thanks to its policies in combating the effects of climate change announced as a national policy starting from July 2022.

Among the other countries on the list, Iceland ranks fourth among Europe’s most sustainable countries to visit in 2024, followed by Sweden in fifth place.

Estonia ranks sixth on the list, then Germany in seventh among Europe’s greenest countries to visit in 2024, and in eighth place is Luxembourg.
