Fathi Bashagha visits Turkey to discuss important issues

Libyan Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha arrived in Turkey on Friday at the head of a high-level delegation to discuss a number of “important” issues.

According to Libyan sources, Bashagha is visiting Turkey along with a number of his deputies and government ministers; to discuss recent developments and the possibility of holding elections in due course.

Libyan political analyst Kamel Al-Maraash said that the visit is very important. Bashagha wants to know the truth about Turkey’s “ambiguous” position on recognizing his government and lifting support for the outgoing government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, which refuses to hand over power.

Future relationship

The visit is part of an evaluation of his relationship with Ankara, the Libyan analyst said, noting that it will have negative or positive consequences on his future relationship with Turkey.

Regarding the timing of the visit, Al-Meraash said that it comes at a critical time for the Libyan Prime Minister, who is convinced that any delay in taking over his duties in Tripoli has negative repercussions on his government, pointing out that Turkey has not made a decision between him and Dbeibeh.

The visit comes amidst a political crisis in Libya and the stumbling road towards finding a solution to the crisis between the two governments, which has not yet reached a solution.

Dangerous turning points

But that crisis took Libya to dangerous junctures, after Libyan military representatives made their participation in the military committee conditional on meeting the four demands.

The demands of the representatives of the Libyan army in the 5+5 committee were: Stop the export of oil, close the coastal road between East and West, stop all cooperation with Dbeibeh government and its components, and stop the conduct of East-West flights.

Complicated situation

A complicated position, Major General Khaled Mahjoub, director of the Moral Guidance Department in the Libyan Army, said in press statements that Dbeibeh blew up the efforts of the 5+5 Military Committee in the cease-fire and its continuation, as well as the unification of institutions and others.

The military official said Dbeibeh made many false promises and acted with intent to undermine the armed forces, which he said cannot be controlled by any party in which the nation is sold.

Not only has the Libyan army suspended its participation in the military committee, but residents and residents of Libyan cities stopped exporting oil from some ports a few days ago, causing Libya to lose nearly 400,000 barrels a day.
