FBI Settles the Debate: Was It a Bullet or Shrapnel That Injured Trump’s Ear?

Following the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, doubts emerged about the nature of his injury: was it caused by a bullet or shrapnel?

The FBI stated on Friday that Trump‘s injury was caused by a bullet or a fragment of a bullet, after testimony by FBI Director Christopher Wray before Congress on Wednesday stirred controversy by suggesting it was shrapnel.

The Republican presidential candidate was injured by gunfire during a campaign rally on July 13 when Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, shot at him in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Wray testified: “Regarding former President Trump, there are questions about whether it was a bullet or shrapnel that hit his ear. I don’t know now if the bullet went elsewhere.”

The American newspaper The Washington Post created a 3D model of the assassination attempt site, based on over 40 videos and images.

The newspaper’s analysis revealed that two teams from the Secret Service’s sniper unit may not have initially seen the shooter.

The analysis also indicated that Trump’s injury appeared consistent with a bullet wound rather than shrapnel, according to Babak Sarani, Director of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at George Washington University Hospital, and Joseph Skran, Director of Emergency General Surgery at Johns Hopkins University.

Sarani stated, “Shrapnel disperses in random patterns, but what hit Trump traveled in a straight line, which leads us to believe it was a bullet rather than shrapnel.”

Former White House physician and current Congressman Ronny Jackson, who has been monitoring Trump’s health since the assassination attempt, criticized Wray’s remarks.

Jackson wrote in an update on Trump’s health: “There is absolutely no evidence that it was anything other than a bullet.”

Jackson added: “Congress needs to correct the record as confirmed by the hospital and myself; Wray is wrong, and it is inappropriate to suggest otherwise.”

Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican from South Carolina, also sent a letter to Wray urging him to correct his testimony before Congress.

Graham wrote on Truth Social: “It is clear that Trump survived an assassination attempt by mere millimeters, as a bullet tore through the top of his ear.”

Following the FBI’s conclusion, he wrote: “I assume this is the best apology we will get from Director Wray, but it is perfectly acceptable.”
